WHY TEST?

At the 2004 Prague Convention on Concussion in Sport Group, numerous physicians and neurologists determined that the old classification of concussions with grades (i.e., Grade I, Grade II, Grade III, etc) was no longer accurate.  They determined it was necessary to wait until ALL symptoms had subsided to completely understand the extent of the injury.  And, for a healthcare provider to fully determine the severity the injury, a NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EXAM is needed every few days following the injury until there are no longer signs or symptoms of a concussion.

WHAT IS A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EXAM?

The exam consists of testing short term and long term memory recall, concentration, balance, cranial nerves, muscles strength, reflexes, and a neurological screening.

HOW LONG DOES THE TEST TAKE?

The tests run about 30 minutes to one hour.

WHY PRE-TEST?

Baseline measurements are needed to determine how far off from "normal" the individual is after a concussion.  If an individual sustains a concussion and is tested after their injury, that data will be compared to their pre-injury test.  This will help the healthcare provider understand the extent of the concussion and what further steps need to be taken to ensure the health and safety of the injured individual.

WHERE IS THIS TEST OFFERED?

At Stanwood Camano Physical Therapy, Joe is introducing a system to offer a neuropsychological exam pre and post injury.  If someone is injured and was not pre-tested, we will still do the post injury testing until the symptoms have subsided to get an idea of the severity of the injury and the direction the care should go.
